Fluoride contamination in Uttar Pradesh has been a serious concern for the past 25 to 30 years. This is not a new challenge. Scientific studies and government reports indicate that the problem had already been identified in several parts of the state as early as the 1990s.
Groundwater in 63 districts of Uttar Pradesh, India's most populous state, contains fluoride levels exceeding prescribed safety standards. In addition, groundwater in 25 districts has been found contaminated with arsenic, while 18 districts are grappling with dangerously high concentrations of both fluoride and arsenic.
The scale of the crisis emerged through data provided by the Uttar Pradesh Water and Sanitation Mission in response to a Right to Information (RTI) application, even as a contradiction has often persisted between official claims and the ground reality.
Until 2004, fluoride contamination was largely confined to parts of Rae Bareli, Unnao and Lucknow districts. However, its geographical spread has expanded rapidly over the years. More recently, Sonbhadra has emerged as one of the state's worst fluoride-affected districts.
More than 200,000 people living in nearly 300 villages across the Kon, Babhani, Myorpur and Dudhi blocks of Sonbhadra are reportedly affected by the crisis. In many places, fluoride concentrations in groundwater have been recorded several times above the safe limit. Some areas have reported fluoride levels as high as 14 milligrams per litre, while the recommended safe limit is one milligram per litre.
Both the central and state governments are pursuing multi-layered strategies to address the issue. Their efforts focus on providing safe drinking water, identifying cases of fluorosis and increasing public awareness.
One of the most significant interventions is the “Jal Jeevan Mission”, which aims to reduce dependence on contaminated groundwater in fluoride-affected villages and supply treated water from surface sources such as rivers and reservoirs.
However, the challenge remains formidable because fluoride accumulates in the human body over long periods, and its effects are difficult to reverse completely. Consequently, ensuring access to clean and safe drinking water remains the most effective way to protect communities from fluorosis.
The disease has already affected thousands of people in the region. Children as young as eight to ten years old begin to develop yellowing and deterioration of their teeth. By the age of 25 to 30, many residents experience a noticeable bending of the spine, and by their mid-thirties, some require walking sticks for mobility.
Yet, this is not merely a health crisis. Its social consequences are equally devastating. In several villages, young men face difficulties finding marriage partners. Yellowed teeth, skeletal deformities and other visible physical impairments have begun to influence social acceptance, while some families report strains and breakdowns in marital relationships.
In Sonbhadra, fluoride-contaminated water has truly become a "sweet poison". It is damaging not only people's health but also the social fabric of entire communities.
Rohnawa Damar village in Kon block, located nearly 100 kilometres from the district headquarters, offers a grim picture of this unfolding tragedy. Home to around 15,000 people, water here is no longer merely a necessity; it has become a source of fear.
Children grow up consuming the same contaminated water from birth, slowly weakening their bodies over time. Yellow teeth have become commonplace, while bent backs are a familiar sight. Visitors to the village frequently encounter people walking with the support of sticks, and in many households at least one family member can be found bedridden due to illness.
This is a tragedy that may not be immediately visible, yet it exists in almost every home. For those whose lives have been shaped by it, this is not a statistic or a government report. It is a harsh daily reality—one in which even drinking water has become a risk.
